iPhone 3GS dilemma, please help

Okay, so, I've just been given an iPhone 3GS that has never been jailbroken or unlocked before so I know the SHSH blobs have never been backed up with Cydia or TinyUmbrella. I need to unlock it and I know there is an untethered jailbreak out for 4.1. So basically I need to downgrade mine. Because the SHSH blobs were never backed up, is there any way to downgrade it using the edit hosts file method or anything? Or what if I were to use a tethered jb for 4.2.1, back them up in Cydia and then try to downgrade? Or do I just have to wait for an untethered 4.2.1 on the 3GS?

No way to downgrade right now without SHSH. But that may change soon with a new tiny umbrella that is being worked on right now.

what if I were to use the current tethered jb on 4.2.1 and then back up the shsh blobs in Cydia? would that work if I tried to downgrade after that?

Nope, you can only get SHSH when Apple is still signing that firmware. Has nothing to do with being jailbroken or what firmware the phone is on.

Damn, okay thanks, guess it'll just be a waiting game. Hopefully we can see a 4.2.1 untethered 3gs soon lol. gotta unlock it for tmobile by christmas. my 3g is just fine with baseband 6.15.00 & 4.2.1, just waitin on this one now :/

For future reference, you don't need to be jailbroken to save SHSHs with TinyUmbrella. Speaking of which, you should probably do that now...

i thought apple was able to defeat tinyumbrella with 4.2.1 with the whole baseband check thing

I'm not sure what you mean... I'm just saying you should save the 4.2.1 SHSHs right now for future use. TinyUmbrella's exit recovery is disabled on 4.2.1, but it can still save SHSHs and utilize them just fine.
