Default new iphone 4 - activation problem

    Hi,

today I just bought a new iphone 4, put the sim card of the provider (sunrise in my case), I switched it on and out the PIN code and got the screen to activate the phone via itunes. But I didn't activate it.

The firmare of the iphone was still 4.1. So, as I already did it for my 3gs I jailbroke my iphone 4 with limera1n.

The oarticular thing is that I jailbroke it directly, even if at the screen I had "activate via itunes". Probably I should have activated it before, my mistake but I hope it's not too bad...

I installed cydia, installed ultrasn0w. But the sim ard doesn't seem to be usable: calls are not working.

I saw another post suggesting to use hacktivation patch, I tried that but I can't install it as it seem to require firmware 3.1.2...

Any ideas on how I can activate my iphone and be able to do calls etc.? (Calls don't work).

    Thanks and cheers

p.s. before jailbreaking it I saved the SHSHs with TinyUmbrella, but it could save only the SHSHs for 4.2.1 so if I have to restore, I guess I'll be able only to resotre to 4.2.1 and not 4.1...

Is your carrier the one the phone is locked to? If you are on 4.1 then ultrasnow will not unlock it.

x98car: yes I just used the carrier sim card... I think I have to activate the iphone, not unlock it.

Then the 1million dollar question: how to activate it as I don't get the screen to do it via itunes?

Kinda confused. If you installed ultrasnow then you have access to the phone. Meaning you are already activated. Are you on a official carrier?

After opening the brand new iphone package, I inserted the sim card, switched on the iphone, got the "activate via itunes screen" but what I did is jailbreaking with limera1n, without activating.

I can access the phone, I can connect via wireless, I can use apps, install apps through cyda, but I can't make or receive phone calls or write SMSs. Also, going to the Phone options I see my number is "unknown".

I tried to reboot my iphone: I was prompted for the pin code. I tried to insert an invalid pin code. When doing so, I get an error. If I insert the valid code, I don't get an error but also I don't get 3G. I just get a very low signal (1 bar, wondering if this is really so).

I'm also confused, I wonder what should I do. I'll try my sim card on another phone maybe...

Still not understanding fully. Are you on official carrier or not? If you are then you shouldnt have used limerain to activate. Activation is getting past the emergency call screen, which you have done. Dont worry about the popup saying "waiting for activation" it doesnt mean anything.

I'm on official carrier. I really regret I didn't do the activation via itunes as supposed to do. Then at least I would know if the sim card works.

I have no idea what happens to the phone or to the sim card when the activation occurs. But I guess not doing it, makes the sim or the phone features (phoning, sms) unusable.

So you said I should not worry (I like your optimism, maybe my carrier didn't activate my sim because it's saturday/sunday and they'll do it on monday?), then I wonder why does that screen come if the activation is not needed? Even the seller told me I had to do it.

Bah, I'll find out something. Worst case restore to 4.2.1 and if it doesn't work I'll go to the carrier and complain

Ok, now that I know you are on official carrier, the question becomes when exactly did you jailbreak? Before or after you got past the emergency call screen?

The problem is if you are using the official carrier, you must activate before using Limera1n. This is probably where you went wrong and caused the problem. I'm assuming you don't have 4.1 SHSHs, unless the previous owner saved them... If you have the SHSHs then restoring should be easy. If not, then you'd have to upgrade to 4.2.1 and deal with a tethered jailbreak for now.

Unluckily I could save only 4.2.1 SHSHs...

I tired to restore (restore and update to last firmware version) via itunes. Download, install etc. ok but in the end I get error 1013: Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV (2nd generation)

I tried also to restore with TunyUmbrella TSS server.

Same error and iphone goes in recovery mode... Any suggestions?

Open tiny umbrella, click on advanced, deselect box that say "set hosts to cydia on exit" then close tiny umbrella. Then try the restore again.

Thx x98car! The hosts file had the cydia server IP, that's why it didn't work...

Ok now I have a new iphone 4.2.1 and I could activate it, luckily! Thanks i.Annie too!

So now I guess I have to wait for the new announced untethered jailbreak that will come soon.

Stupid me: lesson learnt: don't jailbreak a brand new iphone. Activate it first!
