The definitive bottom line is, GPS breaks for any device that has been updated to the 6.15.00. Those reporting it works are using Garmin or Google Maps which use EDGE/3G just like someone else already mentioned. TomTom and Navigon or any true GPS app won't work.
Only those who used the iPad bb before the dev team discovered the problem can complain really, those who do it after the first week of its release just flat out should've read and be aware of it.

so does anyone have an idea why my gps would stop working when I am still on the old baseband? just started going whacky last week without changing firmware or baseband.

Totally agree. I jumped on the unlock maybe within the first day it came out. Thought gps was working until I started reading more here. Installed mobilex lite - has ability to select gps for location method. This is a free way to know for sure and sure enough my gps is not accessible. But no complaints here - unlock is far more important to me!

hi,
just found out a way to get the motion x gps working and so thought of sharing.
step 1: turn on wifi from settings
step 2: turn on motion x gps
step 3: select my position and then click on map
step 4: from the location mode select wifi/triangular mode
step 5: return to map and you will see your position marked by a triangle with "W" on it
step 6: go to location mode once again and select outdoor GPS mode
step 7: return to map and you will see your current position with a blue triangle with "T" on it.
will really appreciate if others try it out and post the result.
have not tried to record a track yet with this method. will try tomorrow and post.
cheers!!

You do know you could have gotten the same result just using the google maps app.
Wifi/cell tower triangulation is not the same as true gps positioning. Dont get me wrong I use the google maps app all the time to plan out a route and it works fine for that, but it is not an actual gps.Last edited by iPittsburgh; 03-08-2011 at 10:09 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

@ iPittsburgh - yes i know that i could have used google apps to get the same result. but if you see the earlier posts, you will notice that we are talking of gps issues including motion x gps on the updated baseband 6.15. since i use motion x gps, i shared the result. i think the outdoor gps mode give you much more accurate position.

Realistically speaking...what are the chances someone will come up with either a fix for the GPS issue or a way for the BB to be downgraded?
How many people have been affected...anyone know?

anyone?

05-20-2011, 01:14 AM #52Apparently no one cares or no one knows. I'll take a wild *** guess that there are thousands but maybe not tens of thousands. Dev team should know based on the downloads. But this is somewhat embarrassing for them so doubtful they will share the stats.

I'm going to guess nobody knows. I don't know.
As for the second question, lots of people have GPS problems with that baseband. I've worked with lots of people. Many of them knew what they were getting themselves into. Only a small handful did it without knowing when the devs didn't announce the gps break yet bc they didn't know yet. And a small handful didn't bother to learn the consequence and did it without research. So what I'm saying is there are quite a few people with broken GPS.

I am one of the people that done BB upgrade to 6.15 at first. We did not know the side effect of BB upgrades (loosing GPS). I heard a news couple of months back DIV Team will stop working on unlock for some BB and they prefer doing BB downgrade from 6.15 this will help allot and in the same time other BB can upgrade to 6.15 and then downgrade in this case everybody will be happy. I didn't know if there any update regarding this. Anybody have any updates?

I heard about the work on downgrading the baseband. Unfortunately that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything about the progress.
