    Default 4.2.1 Baseband check?

So I saw a story on the front page of MMi a week or so age saying that 4.2.1 does a baseband check and will not boot if the current baseband is not installed.

I have a couple of question that I hope one of you could shed some light on.

    1. Why did Apple not implement this sooner? I though about it in the days of 3.x

    2. If 4.2.1 in fact does check the baseband how are old bootrom 3GS users able to get to 4.2.1 with an unlockable baseband by using the Dev Teams (as yet unreleased) unofficial bundle? What does this bundle do?

    Does anyone have an answer?
