i just updated my 3gs to 4.2.1 while preserving my baseband
i havent found a guide for this yet... so having done this almost entirely on my own makes me feel pretty darn good
ill write out a full guide in the morning
but you'll definitely need pwnagetool, a stock 4.2.1 ipsw, redsn0w, and ireb (just in case), plus you will need to drop this firmware bundle into pwnagetool http://iphwn.org/advanced/iPhone2,1_...48a.bundle.zip
my phone is an old bootrom 3gs. i am not guaranteeing this will work for new bootrom 3gs users.DROID does... iPhone does it harder, better, faster, stronger

Great write up. On how to drop the package into pwnagetool. Doesn't talk about how to do the rest of the steps. But that's a good start.

The remaing piece is covered in a PwnageTool tutorial - also on iClarified.
It's up to you if you want to write another. Or add the links while explaining the whole process. Just trying to save you some work

heyyyitsjordan, it would be great that you write a tutorial of this because I read some of these tutorials available in different sites and I still don't know If I can get my Iphone 3GS (Old boot Rom) IOS 4.1 with BB 05.13.04 to update it to 4.2.1 by preserving my baseband and then hactivate it (to be able to unlock it), to unlock it with Ultrasnow and then deativate it again to use the new Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) to re-activate it in a better way to get my push notifications working and don't suffer the battery draining problems. I'm so confused, that a tutorial from someone like you, who did it successfully, would be of a great benefit for me and all other people who is in the same situation.

Ok I'll get to work on this guide. During this process I read on the dev-team blog to uncheck the activate my iPhone option in pwnagetool. I didn't have to go that route. If u would like to test it when I'm done with the guide, I would appreciate the help. Idk if you're supposed to hacktivate in pwnagetool or in redsn0w.

Also, I haven't had any battery drain with the new firmware. From what I read, it the battery drain was reported by people using the 6.15.00 baseband.

yes I would test it but First I need to know if following your way, I would be able to hacktivate the Iphone to later use ultrasnow to unlock it. I don't have the original Sim card! Can you confirm it is possible?

At this time I can not confirm the hacktivation.

The problem is that for me is absolutely necessary to hacktivate it first using Pwnage tool or Redsnow. i think that Pwnagetool "unlock edition" says to deselect the activation so then if it is possible, it should be done using Redsnow (if possible), then one hacktivated, i should be able to enter the Iphone to install ultrasnow to unlock it. last news say that once unlocked, i should unactivate it, to reactivate it using the new SAM utility. this utilify solves the push notifications and derivated battery draining issues. what i need to know before starting the whole process is if with Redsnow i will be able to hacktivate it because it is absolutely necessary in my case because of the lack of an original Sim card. i wouldnt
like to be on 4.2.1 with an unactivated and locked brick.

Pwnage tools 4.1.3 doesn't not hactivate 3gs and it doesn't install cydia when restored. It is untethered at 4.2.1 but no cydia and it doesn't hactivate
You need redsnow to install cydia but excessive battery drain.
Fully charged gets drained within a day without the phone being used.
Now I reverted back to cfw 4.1 . All is good nowLast edited by iYeow; 12-04-2010 at 06:06 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yeow I'm getting the same amount of batter drain on 4.2.1 as I did with 4.1.

If you have 4.1 shsh blogs, create a custom firmware of 4.1 from Snowbreeze 2.1, don't activate it under Expert > General.
Use redsn0w to put your into dfu mode
Open up itunes and shift + restore to this snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw already on your desktop
once restored, put your sim to trigger it.
Unlock it with Ultrasn0w.
I did mine today, my battery life is good.
