Downgrading With Custom Firmware?
so.. I have an iphone 3g (which is not mine) running on 4.0.1 and it is stuck at activation screen.
I figured to download a custom firmware 4.0 and restore with it (I have the SHSH blobs save at saurik) will I be able to shift + restore on itunes, and choose that file and actually downgrade it like that? Does the iPhone need to be in DFU? thanks

You get the phone out of the Activation screen you need to activate the phone or Hactivate it. That means you need a SIM from the official carrier or a JB process which will hactivate the phone. Restoring to a different software is not going to solve your problem.

I've read in many places that you can restore with a hacktivated custom firmware then unlock

Yes you can chose the Hactivation process while building the custom firmware. Like I said you need a jailbreak process that hactivates the phone a custom firmware which has hactivation checked is a jailbreak process which hactivates the phone. However, if you can get a SIM either on loan from a friend or a no longer active SIM from the original carrier you will be in a better position.
You will find hactivation kills the battery.
