iPhone 3g 05.14.02 + 4.1 unlock?
i've spent an hour reading and i am still so lost here
i am currently jailbroken and would like to unlock.
i have come across 2 options.
number 1)
from what i have read i can unlock if i use redsnow and use the ipad baseband.
but i will never be able to restore or update with out doing custom IPSWs. correct? this scares me a bit as i would like the easiest option to restore/upgrade in the future.
also, i am PC and i think i need a mac to do this.
number 2)
downgrade the baseband. fuzzyband says it can downgrade but i have it current installed and says i can't. however the fuzzyband twitter says it can do my baseband.
i am at a loss here.
i want to unlock my 3G with an eye on future ease of upgrades.
please help!
also, i installed ultrasn0w via cydia just to see what would happen. the phone rebooted after install. i see no indication if unlock failed or worked. any help on this and how to remove it?

If you use iforecast and have a bootloader of 5.8, then you can downgrade your baseband , unfortunately only a small percentage out there has the bootloader.
I think this 3g is going to become obselete by next year, just like the iphone 2g, you might as well update your bb to the ipad bb to be able to unlock with Ultrasn0w.
And not worry so much about future updates, there will alwsya be custom firmware available.Last edited by iYeow; 12-01-2010 at 12:09 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

thanks for your suggestion
i went ahead and did it using redsnow
the oddest thing has happened. all springboard animations make the screen flicker. like swiping between pages, opening apps.
has anyone heard of this?
the phone has an absolutely clean install of 4.1 before this.
has anyone heard of this? or know of a fix?
ok bad news
so after i applied the unlock the phone just randomly rebooted and was pretty much unresponsive.
from what i read i could do a restore by creating a custom ipsw.
i'm on pc. what can i used to do this?
2nd update:
i'm probably a total moron for doing this but i tried doing a shift-restore using the 4.2.1 ipsw in itunes.
the phone is now showing the "connect to itunes" image.
please, for the love of all things holy.
please tell me what to do. i got over excited and n00bish and now i am worried i'm farked.Last edited by fucdemas; 12-01-2010 at 08:14 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I suggest you leave a lot more info about you phone, what you exactly did! Step by step! Ask nicely for help!
There have already been some post about this topic! And I though I saw a tool fix in cydia that fixed the wobble screen!
People may refuse to answer you, due to how you ask, and how polite you are. The smarter IPhone hackers tend to keep there distance from the ones who don't use the search function, or spend a few hours looking through post, or tools!
But, for advise that maybe to late! Do not upgrade directly from ITunes! This may be a very bad thing for you! At any rate, I would try tinyumbrella to get you out! Or any of the other tools avil to move you from restore!
But then, you will prob have to do a full restore on your phone, to obtain it working again! Be smart about that one! The tools may only be out for MAC, and not windows yet! Or visa versa! You need to look them up.
If you list, all your info! What your wiling with, computers, software, IOS, Baseband and all, as a list, it will be a bit more easy to figure out, what happened with you, and your phone

thanks for the suggestion!
i thought my exasperation would come across as appreciative of all help. didn't mean to be rude.
here's what steps i went through:
i used this iclarified guide to jailbreak my 3G with 4.2.1
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]
i installed 4.2.1 via shift-restore.
jailbroke with redsn0w installing the ipad baseband
glitch/flickering problem was noticed.
then used ultrasn0w in cydia to unlock
the phone became incredibly slow and unresponsive. it would go through random reboots once every 4 minutes or so.
thats when i tried a restore via itunes.
it is now stuck showing the connect to itunes image
info on phone:
4.2.1
ipad baseband
other tools:
i have tried f0recast 1.2 to check the boot loader - does not connect to phone
tinyumbrella - i hit "exit recovery". it reboots the phone which then ends up where it was before: "connect to itunes" image
iREB: i was able to get the greenscreen which indicates i can load a custom firmware.
this is good news, right!
this got me very excited.
so i assume my next step is to create a custom firmware with the ipad baseband to restore the phone with.
or...
to figure out my bootloader version and see if i could downgrade to an unlockable baseband. is this possible now that i'm using the ipad baseband?
thanks everyone for your help so far.

I would try starting over! And if you get back to the point of wobble. Don't unlock! Look for fixes, then unlock.
