iPhone 4 Unlock via Ultrasn0w not working
I have an iPhone 4, running Version 4.1(8117), baseband is 01.59.00. x98car just helped me jailbreak it succesfully.
You can find the post here:
Non Restoring iPhone4 & 3GS iPod not working
I've checked if my phone can be unlocked using x98car's sticky here and it can:
[How To] Check if you can Unlock
I am on normal firmware 4.1(8B117) from the apple site and have my phone jailbroken with cydia installed. I've also added cydia.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia.
The phone is locked to T-Mobile. I turned off 3G & cellular data, turned the phone off, took out the tmobile sim, put in the 3 sim, rebooted, went to cydia, installed ultrasn0w and waited for the unlock but it didn't happen. It just says searching first, then no service.
I then removed the 3 sim, removed ultrasn0w, turned the phone off. Put in the Tmobile sim, waited for signal, (3G & cellular data is off), installed ultrasn0w again. Turned the phone off, put in the 3 sim, turned it on - but it still says No Service.
helloviet & givemeagain are facing the same problem but on the newer baseband.
I know that I'm doing it right as I've unlocked a few phones before this as well.
What am I doing wrong here?
I hope someone can help.
Thanks!

Is it a micro sim that you bought or did you cut one down? Just asking because I had the same problem when I was in Spain trying to use a micro sim I bought from Vodafone. Turned out the phone was unlocked the whole time and for some reason it wouldn't work with a true micro, but rather a cut down one. I don't know why. I am also on 4.1, 1.59.00. Here's my thread if it will help.

What jailbreak tool did you use. Check your carrier settings and see if it is your carrier settings or some others

@mac4life:
I ordered a new sim from 3 and they have deactivated my old sim which I was using in a nokia phone and have supposedly activated my new micro sim. I have called the micro sim activation team and they have confirmed it.
Thank you for the link to your thread, you have gone through a lot! I will keep the advice in mind and will get started on it if iYeow's advice doesn't work.
@iYeow:
I used limerain and Tiny Umberella.
About carrier settings, I have an iPhone 3GS which is Jailbroken but on baseband 05.14.02, so I can't unlock it. Which is fine. When I go to Settings->General->Network-> I have an option called Cellular Data Network within which I can make changes to the carrier settings like APN, username, password, etc.
But,when I go to Settings->General->Network-> on my iPhone 4, I dont' have Cellular Data Network . I only have Cellular Data, Data Roaming, Internet Tethering, VPN & WiFi.
What I can I do to get it to show?
Thanks for your time !

Yes I am having this "no service problem"
But, I do have the Cellular Data Network option.
Baseband 6.15.00, OS 4.1, iPhone 3gs, carrier T-Mobile.
also, if you haven't yet, try going to a different location.
I had signal in my car on my way to school this morning, but then it went away once I got there.
On the way back, no signal.
In my house, had 1 little bar for about 10 seconds, then it went away.Last edited by helloviet; 11-30-2010 at 09:10 PM.

I've been to Unlockit - APN Changer for your iPhone on my phone and tried to get them to install my apn settings for the 3 network. That did not work as well.
@helloviet:
Thanks for that mate, I'll try that as well and post back.
I've called 3 & Tmobile as well, neither have been able to help. Since the phone is locked to Tmobile, I can browse on the 3G but I cant send or receive text messages or make or receive calls as well.
When I put in the 3 sim, I get the 'no service' message & the phone tells me that the 'cellular network is restricted'.
When I put in the Tmobile sim, I have good network coverage and 3G active, but the above happens. Only browsing, no calls or texts.
I've tried a 'reset all settings' option and 'reset network settings' option as well.
I've put in a request for the phone to be officially unlocked as well. Is there something wrong with the jail break, or is it something else to do with the iPhone4 itself?
Someone please answer! Be my Savior!!
Cheers for everything guys...
@helloviet: I've tried different places but the issue is still the same. No calls or text, only browsing. Ultrasn0w has been removed.Last edited by lordra; 12-01-2010 at 07:22 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Oh, okay.
I don't even have 3G :< even though I should. My last phone has 3G (G1) but when I activate it, nothing happens. Or, nothing NEW, rather.

I posted this in a different topic but I will post it here. Downgrade to ultrasn0w-1.1-1, I had the same exact issue on ultrasn0w-1.2, and downgrading it fixed it.
I had this in my log on ultrasn0w-1.2
You will have to search on Google to find the deb, then put it on your phone, then "dpkg -i /path/to/ultrasn0w-1.1-1.deb" to manually install it.Code:ERROR! ultrasn0w works only for baseband "01.59.00", but this baseband is ""
The old version gets the baseband version correctly and unlocks 100% of the time, provided you are on 01.59.00.
Best of luck.

Hi Ember,
Sorry to sound like a noob, but I'm still learning here. First off, thanks for taking the trouble to reply. If you can, it would be nice if you could please post the link to that thread so that i can read about it more? Thank you.
I have the deb, but how do I put it on the Phone? I have iPhone Browser but I dont know where to put it.
Please help.
Thanks!
@Ember:
I carried out the following steps.
1.Downloaded mobilesubstrate_0.9.3226-1 & ultrasn0w-1.1-1.
2.Ran iPhone browser.
3.Went to /private/var/root/Media and made a folder called Cydia.
4.Created a folder in that called Autoinstall
5.Restarted the iPhone with the Tmobile sim inside, wireless on, cellular data off.
6.Went to Cydia, went to manage->sources & saw that ultrasn0w 1.2 was installed.
I had previously uninstalled 1.2 before installing 1.1-1.

There was nothing different from that post to this one.
First off start up Cydia Install OpenSSH onto your iPhone and uninstall ultrasn0w from Cydia just to be safe.
Download PuTTY and WinSCP.
Start up PuTTY and put in your iPhone's IP address and press the Open button at the bottom. Wait for like 30 seconds until a dialog pops up asking if you agree that the iPhone's signature is correct, just press yes.
Type in root as the username and alpine as the password.
Connect with WinSCP using the same IP and username/password combination.
Drag and drop the ultrasn0w-1.1-1.deb file into the /private/var/root directory (its open by default in WinSCP when you first logon) and wait for it to finish transferring.
Once done, type in your PuTTY console "dpkg -i ultrasn0w-1.1-1.deb" no quotes.
Reboot your phone. Done.
Just don't upgrade ultrasn0w in Cydia until the dev team fixes it.

@Ember:
Thanks for such a quick reply! I've done exactly as you've said and I now have 1.1-1 installed. However, the message I get on top now is "No Service".
In settings->general->about->
Network - not available. When I click on that, it says 'phone not allowed'
Version - 4.1 (8B117)
Carrier - Three 8.0
Modem Firmware - 01.59.00
Now this means that the 3 microsim that I received from them on Monday isn't working. I have phoned the microsim activation team twice already to check and confirm if the sim is up and running and have called customer services as well. They say the sim is working fine. The only thing that I can do now is to take the phone to T mobile (because it was originally locked to Tmobile) and ask them to swap my sim into another phone and put another sim into mine just to see if I can make and receive calls and send texts, as originally, only 3G data worked, not calls or texts.
Then I have to go to the 3 store and ask them for another microsim to put in to see if it works. But I'm really suprised that the message that I am getting on the top left is "No Service".
Is that better than invalid sim?
Or does that mean that the sim is not active. Whatever it is, it will have to wait till you come back to see this, or I go to the stores tomorrow morning after work.
Thanks for all the help Ember. I've learnt a lot tonight, even if my problem wasn't solved. Thanks again.

View /private/var/wireless/Library/Logs/ultrasn0w-dylib.log using the Right Click->Edit feature in WinSCP.
Check for something like the following at the top of the log. If you see it, ultrasn0w is doing its job and it's the carrier's fault.The log will continue to show what the CommCenter and baseband are doing throughout the time your iPhone is on. Pretty nifty, right?Code:ultrasn0w loaded via CommCenter InternalNotification at: 0x4e5bd InternalNotification can be called at: 0x2fa001 XLockHandler at: 0x268e1 XLockHandler can be called at: 0x2fb001 ultrasn0w hooked CommCenter sending internal notification: 7 Baseband reset! Will take it to the store. And will post back tomorrow.
Hope this thread helps all the users who read it as I've typed out the steps required for noobs to follow through.
Thanks to Ember & iYeow for all their guidance & support, especially Ember! Thanks so much mate!
Will keep you posted here.

Good, that is the proper +XLOCK response after your phone is unlocked.
Try getting a regular SIM and cutting it down to size, maybe they got a bad batch of MicroSIMs.

@Ember:
I've just borrowed my mates sim card from his O2 iphone & popped it into mine. I found that I had the same problem-I was not able to send texts or make calls. The 3G symbol showed on the top left, but there weren't any bars in the network signal.
I'm starting to think that there could be an issue in the phone. What is your opinion?

It's beginning to sound like the IMEI of your iPhone was blacklisted - thus why it said "phone not allowed"

Copy that. I'm working on it now.
Do you want me to keep you posted or not?

@Ember:
I want to restore the phone to as new without updating the firmware.
I ran tiny umbrella, started the TSS server, connected the phone, started iTunes, did a SHIFT+Restore, but at the end it says 'iPhone could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (6). What can I do?

Are you using a custom PwnageTool firmware? I always use my Macbook when working on iPhone stuff, it seems to be a lot easier.
With the PwnageTool custom firmwares it is necessary to enter DFU mode using PwnageTool, without getting into to much detail, it does something special that allows iTunes to restore Pwned firmwares without throwing errors.
But I don't think error 6 was the error it showed when you didn't use PwnageTool. Try changing to a different USB port on the back of your computer maybe?
