Nope, using normal firmware, unmodded, from apple. I don't have a macbook!
No, 6 is related to USB. Now I'm on a laptop and have tried all three ports. I'm going to try a desktop now and see if that helps.

Also, I've raised a case with ebay with regards to the phone and the buyer has agreed to take it back. A quick check on checkmend shows that the phone is stolen. And that the IMEI number is blocked. Ebay has told me to send the phone back and go to the police. That's what I'm going to do.
    On monday.
Which is why I wanted to wipe it all out before sending it out.

So I was right, your phone was stolen and the IMEI was blacklisted! I guess this shows you that you have to be careful with who and where you buy phones from, and to check to see if it is stolen.

Why not just do a factory reset on the device? That would be easier than restoring it with iTunes.

I tried taking it to another computer but I still get error 6. The phone then goes into restore mode again.

Also, when I try putting it in DFU mode, tiny umbrella doesn't show a device connected. Only when its in recovery mode does TU recognize it.

So I now have the same iPhone 4 in normal restore mode with repeated error 6 msgs.
The msg from the iPhone error wiki site, to quote, is "Not enter the downgrading mode, change USB port (the back one of chassis is better) and restart computer."
I'm on a laptop and have tried all my ports. I tried DFU as well as recovery mode too. Did many restarts.
Doing it on a desktop now.
    Help?

IIRC when you connect the iPhone in DFU mode it doesn't show up in Tiny Umbrella, it will say something in the log tab like "DFU mode device connected" but not show you the device name.

So if you start the TSS server and start up iTunes with the device in DFU, you will get a prompt to restore it before it can be used, and that should work just fine.

I wanted to do that but then I don't know what got over me, I just didn't think. Right now the dam thing is in recovery mode. If I kick it out using TU then it comes back into recovery again.
If I get back the OS then that's all I need since I'm sending it back. I don't care. But this blasted error 6 msg keeps up all the time.
I bought the phone off eBay. Thru PayPal. I'm safe because of that. Never thought I'd have to use it.
But I have to send it back to him with the GUI. So...

    UPDATE!
You are SO NOT going to believe this. I just had a brainwave & thought that I should change to another Apple USB cable. And that actually bloody worked!
    WHOOOO!
I had the 1004 error and I used TU & the phone is back to normal. Sheeeesh. Who would've thought!!!
Thanks so much for all the help Ember.
I'll be sending it back on Monday now.
    Cheers!

First off start up Cydia Install OpenSSH onto your iPhone and uninstall ultrasn0w from Cydia just to be safe.

    Download PuTTY and WinSCP.

Start up PuTTY and put in your iPhone's IP address and press the Open button at the bottom. Wait for like 30 seconds until a dialog pops up asking if you agree that the iPhone's signature is correct, just press yes.

Type in root as the username and alpine as the password.

Connect with WinSCP using the same IP and username/password combination.

Drag and drop the ultrasn0w-1.1-1.deb file into the /private/var/root directory (its open by default in WinSCP when you first logon) and wait for it to finish transferring.

Once done, type in your PuTTY console "dpkg -i ultrasn0w-1.1-1.deb" no quotes.

    Reboot your phone. Done.

Just don't upgrade ultrasn0w in Cydia until the dev team fixes it.
how do you do the equivalent of this from a Mac?

did it on a windows pc. But still No Service...sigh

I do remember that when the phone was working I did have an older version of ultrasn0w, so I do find it strange that having downgraded ultrasnow it still doesnt work.

Do I need to download the mobilesubstrate?

I'm not sure about the number, I dont have the phone on me. Just get the latest one or any version that you find shouldn't be a problem. install only MS then run cydia,
    update it, then install ultrasnow.

im going to give this all a fresh restore in a bit. Nothing works, no signal whatsoever. Where my mobile carrier name should be by the signal bar, it just says -113 now. Very odd.

I am going to create a custom ipsw using 4.1 original restore (but will not hacktivate it). I will insert original carrier sim card to activate. Then I will load ultrasnow 1.1.1 using the instructions youve provided in an earlier post.

Regarding mobilesubtstrate, I read that if you install Winterboard you should already have a mobilesubstrate installed by default.

    @geomic:
Did you do a checkmend check on it to see if it is blocked?
Do as you said you would and follow my steps.
IMO I don't think that mobilesubtstrate comes with winterboard as I already had that installed but mobilesubtstrate did not show in Cydia.
    Let me know what happened.

If you're on 4.2 and JB then that means you've used the ipad firmware.
I don't know about using that firmware. Sorry... Try an older version of USnow, maybe v.1.1-1

Oh right, 4.1. Just use the older version, follow my steps in this thread, you'll be good to go.
Make sure you're in DFU mode and using original cables.
