so, my mother in law decided to drop her iphone into the toilet last week and it appears to be dead. I was able to get my hands on a 3g for really cheap. the version is 2.2.1, with the baseband being 2.30.03

i was contemplating doing the 4.2 update/unlock with the 6.15 baseband, but I keep seeing people saying not to do this method of unlocking unless I HAVE TO. since i have a really old baseband 2.30.03 should I just update to 3.1.2? then do the cydia thing and shsh or whatever its called xD and save my baseband then update to 4.2.1 and then unlock?

just confused on what steps i should be taking with this phone. i guess the whole DONT DO IT UNLESS YOU NEED TO Disclaimers on the instructions ive seen so far is making it kinda scary. Any help would be appreciated thx. ^^
