"iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible"

BEFORE ALL THIS HAPPENED - PHONE WAS RUNNING: 3.1.3 (7E18) - any other info I do not have as it wont boot - it was updated when 4.0 came out i believe as I had 4.0 on it for a few days until i realized it was slow/laggy

Im wiping my iphone 3g clear of all information and then unlocking and jailbreaking for a friend who is going to use it on tmobile.

I went into general>reset>erase all iphone data -- it loaded the progress bar and then held at the apple logo (still doing that) - im able to put it in recovery mode by holding down the home button and plugging it into the computer

However - when i go to shift > restore to a downloaded firmware from http://www.felixbrun.../iPod/firmware/ (iphone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw)
and then gives me the error displayed as the title of this thread

Is it because I have itunes 10 installed for my iphone4?
if yes - if i uninstall i10 and install i9.2 will it work and will i lose my iphone4 backups/sync info?

id really like to get this phone up and running asap - ill be checking this thread religiously but if someone would like to help walk me through it via aim/email/text thatd be awesome too

someone just told me i have a 3gs firmware so i am downloading it now (1 hour until finish -- slowwww dorm internet)

my questions:
1) will this work with itunes 10? or do i still have to install 9?
2) whats my next steps in unlocking/jailbreaking after i get that firmware on?

That's an iPhone 3GS firmware. You want one that starts with iPhone 1,2

what would i do next?

1) jailbreak with limera1n
2) unlock with ultrasn0w

Limera1n is only for 4.1. You will need to use redsn0w.

could you please link me to the version i would need so i dont have to deal with more stress when something doesnt work due to my stupidity haha - and/or a guide for how to do it?

Shift + restore to 3g 3.1.3 ipsw.
If error 1015 pops up, then use Exit recovery from the feature of Tiny Umbrella.
Now you will be at emergency screen.
Run Redsn0w 0.9.4 but browse to 3.1.2 ipsw which you have to download as well.
Redsn0w will hactivate, jailbreak it for you.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.

i was updating my apps and my iphone 3g froze. i rebooted it and it went to the apple logo and cuts itself off. ive downloaded itunes 10, and im lost after that. when i tried to restore my phone it said the firmware i have is not compatible. help.
