Default 3G stay on 4.1 or upgrade to 4.2 reason is 6.15 baseband ? update - done and working

    3G shall I stay on 4.1 or update to 4.2 ?
Reason I am asking is the one way upgrade to 6.15 baseband which may be locked forever and not allow me to go back to 4.1
I am currently on 4.1 shall I upgrade to 4.2 knowing that I will forever be stuck on it ? Is the 4.2 better for the 3G ? I am on 5.14 baseband. All opinions and personal experience appreciated.

Might as well go to 4.2.1 on a 3G. You wont be stuck on it though. You can always go back to 4.1 and you should be able to update to newer firmwares with custom firmwares. Unlockers should always be using custom firmwares anyway.

just like x98car says, better to upgrade to 4.2.1 before you use the new redsnow jb and unlock cause you might get into problems like a lot of people are having.

based on my experience, i got 2 3G iphone that was accidentally updated to 4.2.1 fw and 5.15.04 bb. the 4.2.1 does made the iphone run a lot smoother than 4.0,4.1 so i was glad it did. and now that the new unlock were out, ive decided to go with it.

both iphone 3G were not jailbroken after updating to 4.2.1. got all my files such as the new redsnow 0.9.6b5 and the 4.2.1 ipsw file.
ran redsnow and followed all the instructions, waited a few minutes, installation was done and successful with no errors found. went to cydia and did all its reloading, then went to ultrasnow 1.2 to unlock. after a few minutes iphone 3G was officially unlocked.

goodluck and hope you do it well too without any problems.

Default Could it still be possible to go 4.2.1?

Thanks MM8 for sharing your experience...

Mine was a little different...I was on 4.1, 3G and 5.14.02 went jailbroken with Redsnow B5 and thus ended up in BB 6.15 and unlocked just fine.

However, what I really want is 4.2.1, but doesn't seem like I could do it?? I am on W7 and no Mac is available for Pwnage Tool to cook custom firmware. On the other hand, Redsnow in DFU could only jailbreak your current IOS but couldn't upgrade to 4.2.1; while iTune restore/upgrade to 4.2.1 on BB 6.15 obviously put you in recovery loop!

Am I missing something that other was able to achieve? Thanks for you comment.

The difference is he updated first and then updated his baseband to 6.15.00.

Default Any recourse for ipad BB to go 4.2.1?

Thanks X98Car for your comment...and yes, that's what I figured out lately (should have updated ios before update baseband)...

However, my question is: are there any recourse (for 4.1 BB 6.15) to upgrade to 4.2.1???

The new method worked perfectly for me twice now.

    I have two 3G phones.
Both were restored on itunes with 4.2.1
    Then Jailbroken with redsnow b5.
    Installed Cydia
    Installed iPad Baseband
Few minutes after went into Cydia
    Insralled the new Ultrasnow
Now I have two jailbroke/unlocked phones.

Hope I didnt do something wrong though but so far so good.

Thanks to the Dev Team for their hard work to help us out.

Right now a custom 4.2.1 is the only option.
