iPhone stuck on Recovery
So i have an iphone 3g. I jailbroke it and unlocked it and everything worked fine but when i tried to transfer my old phone's contents to the new phone the phone went into recovery mode and now i can't get it out. I've tried redoing the jailbreak but itunes keeps giving me errors like 1016 right as the restoring is about to finish. I've tried kicking it out of recovery using tiny umbrella but I can't get it out to even ipod usable mode. I found something that said to use iRecovery but i didn't really understand how to do it. I would love any suggestions please!
oh and i used the new unlock upgrading to the ipad firmware.Last edited by sash23; 11-29-2010 at 06:33 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

So you are at 4.2.1 with ipad baseband, am i right ?
You have a tethered jailbreak.
Use Redsn0w and check the box , tether boot.

I have successfully unlocked 3 iPhones 3G on iOS 4.2.1 with the iPad baseband. Using both pwnage and redsn0w.
With one of them I had the same issue- stuck in recovery loop.
To solve this I restored the iPhone to 4.2.1 again through itunes, and reran redsn0w without 'update baseband checked'(you've already updated it)
Please thanky thanky when this works
Be sure to run redsn0w in compatibility mode 'XP sp3' or win95.

I am in the same situation and have tried that, I have been getting an error (1015 I think) from iTunes. I guessed this was because iTunes was able to check the baseband when restoring. To confirm I should be able to install standard 4.2.1 (restore) firmware, or should I be using the custom one generated by PwnageTool?

Kick it out of recovery mode with tinyumbrella. If that doesn't work restore to custom 4.2.1, or downgrade using your SHSH blobs, your updated baseband will remain on the iPad BB.

Tinyumbrella didn't work. It will restart the phone but it just goes straight back to recovery mode. I try restoring 4.2.1 on itunes but at the very end itunes says error 1016 and won't finish. How do i downgrade using SHSH blobs?

Sorry I won't be able to help much as I am exactly the same situation as you. Do you have the SHSH blobs saved (will be shown in TinyUmbrella)? If so for which version of iOS (this information should also be shown by TinyUmbrella)? Note I have 4.1 SHSH blob saved. My understanding is that to restore to stock firmware you have to trick iTunes into authenticating your downgraded firmware by changing IP address of gs.apple.com (or something) in your hosts file. Will update you with any more info as I find it.
Please let me know any

Can i download a 4.1 shsh blob somewhere?

Sorry, but I think that you have to have saved your own SHSH blob, either through Cydia or TinyUmbrella. I think it is unique to your phone/iOS version combination, and that the blob from another phone will not work.
If you don't have it I don't know what the next step is.

I just downgraded using my saved SHSH blob to 4.1 and now the phone starts

Now to jailbreak it again
After the downgraded. I used Tinyumbrella to kick out of recovery and now I have icons again

That is good there is some hope for my phone then

Can I confirm a couple of things with you? Was your SHSH blob for 4.1? Did you downgrade to standard 4.1 (ie the standard apple restore.ipsw)? What are the steps to downgrade using saved SHSH blob? Did you have to redirect gs.apple.com to 74.208.10.249 via your hosts file? Do you have to run the TSS Server with Tiny Umbrella while downgrading firmware?
Note for sash23, you can find much more (too much?) detail about SHSH blobs here: http://www.saurik.com/id/12.
In addition that references forum on mmi on downgrading here, http://modmyi.com/forums/3g-s-downgrading/ which might be a better place to get assistance:Last edited by hkpatv; 12-01-2010 at 12:34 AM.

yes I did for both questions
I ran the TSS Server using Tinyumbrella then did a restore selecting a standard apple ipswWhat are the steps to downgrade using saved SHSH blob? Did you have to redirect gs.apple.com to 74.208.10.249 via your hosts file? Do you have to run the TSS Server with Tiny Umbrella while downgrading firmware?
Also I had an old inactive AT&T sim in. I dont know if having this did any difference.
Good Luck!! and dont give up! I nearly did after what felt like 100 re-flashes before I tried this.Last edited by adamvnz; 12-01-2010 at 02:01 AM.

All good, restored to base 4.1 firmware, ignored 4015 error, exited Recovery Mode using Tiny Umbrella, and am now jailbreaking with redsn0w. Thanks for those with advise and good luck to those still with problems.

If you have NOT saved SHSH blobs on previous firmware then you could restore again to 4.2.1 using CUSTOM 4.2.1 firmware- the apple 4.2.1 .ipsw won't work.(Please not that JB 4.2.1 still has a lot of issues and crashes)
You may have saved blobs without knowing by clicking 'make my life easier' in cydia on your phone.
An easy way to check if you have saved SHSH blobs(without checking on cydia as your phone isn't going) is to download a usbviewer such as USB VIEW, put your iPhone in DFU mode and run USB VIEW- click on apple device and copy/note your ECID number.
Then download tinyumbrella(if you haven't already) and copy/paste your ECID number and check available blobs. If you have 4.1 blobs saved- restore to that by clicking TSS server in tinyumbrella and shift+click restore to 4.1 .ipsw through itunes. Then boot your device out of recovery via tinyumbrella after the restore and reJB. Your baseband will stay on the iPad unlockable BB even through a restore.
The other option, failing having blobs is to restore to iOS 3.1.3- you don't need blobs to restore to that.
Please thank if this works.Last edited by mattybobatty; 12-01-2010 at 05:45 AM.

Pretty much as I described above. I made sure the redirection to gs.apple.com in /etc/hosts (I am on OS X) was in place (not sure if that was important). Note I have saved 4.1 hash through TinyUmbrella. Used iTunes to restore standard 4.1 firmware, ignoring error 1015 at the end. Kicked out of recovery using TinyUmbrella, which got me into unactivated 4.1 state on iPhone. Then jailbroke using redsn0w.
