Need to Unlock 3G

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on here. I had the OG 2G phone that I Jailbroke and used for almost 2 years until I broke it. I bought a 3G from ebay to get by until 4G gets alittle cheaper but I didn't move up like the technology did and made a stupid mistake and froze the 3G so I had to upgrade to the 4.1 which I can't unlock. I have afew questions. I feel like I am a noob at this so they may be noob questions. This is why I started a new post. Evertime I read these other posts I get really confused. Anyway here we go.

1. What is the teathered/unteathered jailbreaking/unlocking.

2. Can I do the whole thing from my iphone without a computer?

3. How do I confirm that my phone is not a 3gs phone.

4. How do I know if the Bootrom I have is old or new.

5. If I am on 4.1 can I stay at 4.1 to unlock or do I need to
move up to 4.2 using redsnow?

6. I don't have a problem voiding anything seeing as I don't
have a AT&T account so that doesn't bother me.

Please Advise me guys. Thanks again, I'm sorry if these questions are *** but I am trying to make sure I get my phone working again cause I am hating carrying around 3 phones.

Tethered means you have to use a computer and a software like redsn0w to boot up your iphone everytime you power down.
Unlocking means you can use any gsm around the world.

2. Can I do the whole thing from my iphone without a computer?

No, you need a computer

3. How do I confirm that my phone is not a 3gs phone.

3g does not have a compass icon.

4. How do I know if the Bootrom I have is old or new.

All 3g have the same old bootrom

5. If I am on 4.1 can I stay at 4.1 to unlock or do I need to
move up to 4.2 using redsnow?

To move up to 4.1 , you need to preserve your current baseband by restoring to custom firmware.

6. I don't have a problem voiding anything seeing as I don't
have a AT&T account so that doesn't bother me.

Good, then you can do what you want with your iphone even to the extend of bricking it.

1. You mentioned the compass icon I do have this so does that
mean I have a 3GS phone? This would explain the problem I had
trying to jailbreak the phone when I had 4.0 software.

2. Ok so now that I may have a 3GS how do I verify what bootrom
I have?

3. Ok and in your answer to question 5 you said to move up to 4.1 I believe you were meaning 4.2 but not sure. I am currently
at 4.1 so can I stay at 4.1 and still unlock? If not no
worries. I need to get the ipad firmware to move up to 6.15
correct? I don't need to rush so I am making sure I
understand exactly what I need to do before I do it.

4. And last and surely least by bricking it you mean breaking it
beyond usage correct? If so yes it isn't that big a deal
considering it doesn't work now lol

I recently saw that this new jailbreak and unlock will turn off GPS is this true???

Also, I saw that My serial number begins with an 87 instead of an 88 and I have a 22 in it so I am assuming this is an older version of the 3gs phones can anyone confirm?

If you have an o2 iphone, read this first. You may be able to do it officially...no hacking needed

No I don't have an o2 phone O used to have one of those I know have a 3GS that needs to be unlocked.
