iPhone 3GS (05.13.04) -> 4.2.1

hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS at baseband 05.13.04 and currently unlocked and want to update to 4.2.1.

I'm a little confused because the dev team says "update to stock 4.2.1, then use redsnow".
is this really necessary? since 05.13.04 is unlockable, couldn't I just create a custom 4.2.1 that doesn't upgrade my baseband and then use ultrasn0w?

For current unlocked iPhones, can get to 4.2.1 .... but BB must be updated to 6.15...... This will work but NOT recommended.

Best to wait a bit longer. The dev-team blog mentioned they will release a modified tool later for people in this situation. (I'm in this boat too. Want 4.2.1 but NOT 6.15.)

the blog was updated, it now says

If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, use redsn0w for an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak (it can now install the iPad baseband too).

as I can see, this only mentions jailbreaking, not unlocking. I'm not an unlock noob, I've been unlocking since the early days, but honestly: I don't get it.
1) Why do I need to upgrade to an ipad baseband if I'm still on an unlockable baseband
2) I'm still not certain if I need to upgrade to official 4.2.1, to an pwnagetool 4.2.1 that has the ipad baseband or simply to an 4.2.1 pwangetool firmware

any help would be appreciated

for people reading this: I used the 3GS 4.2.1 bundle released by the dev team (see their blog) to upgrade my 3GS to 4.2.1 without upgrading my baseband. after that I jailbroke with redsn0w - no problems!

be reminded that you need to be able to activate your phone with a valid sim in order to do this.

My question is: What do I do to upgrade the baseband and unlock and stay on 4.1? thanks for any replies

I can answer your question. [ONLY FOR 3GS users]

You will require 3 tools in order preserve your BB, unlock & jailbreak your iphone.

1. Pawnage Tool Latest version (Unlock EDITION)
2. Redsnow latest version.
3. Ultrasnow

1. [PRESERVES BB] The current Pawnage tool DOES NOT jailbreak the iphone - as in, it does not install cydia. This unofficial pawnage tool release from iphone dev team is to allow the phone to be upgraded to 4.2.1 WITHOUT upgrading your baseband, hence, it will preserve your existing BB.

2. [JAILBREAK IPHONE] Latest redsnow only works on 4.2.1 firmware, therefore, in order for redsnow jailbreak an iphone, you MUST HAVE 4.2.1 software, hence pawnage tool.

3. [UNLOCKS] Unlock the iphone using Ultrasnow in cydia.


Please BEAR IN MIND, this method is only applicable to those that have a BB firmware of 5.13.04 or below. THIS IS A TRIED AND TESTED METHOD, I JB my iphone this way - iPhone 3GS 32GB 5.13.04, OLD BOOTROM

For those with BB above 5.13.04 must upgrade to 4.2.1 official, then JB with Redsnow using the iPad firmware in order to unlock.

Please Note:

3GS OLD BOOTROM = UNTETHERED JB
3GS NEW BOOTROM = TETHERED JB

The main purpose of my post is for those wanting to upgrade to 4.2.1 using an iphone 3GS with a BB below 5.13.04 as per the original post.

Good point raised, either way, their baseband will be upped to 06.15, so may as well upgrade to 4.2.1 (for those that iphone BB ABOVE 5.13.04)

Agreed. I suggest updating your post to remove the 'absolutely' and 'required' words and replace the with easiest and maybe best.

Remember, some are happy w/4.1 and want to wait for the Cydia app updates before going ahead.

Yeah very true, only issue i've come across thus far is when applying SISTA theme, the dock does not change. Saurik must of been burning the midnight oil, Cydia is alot faster to load and search for apps now.

Hi mes thanks for answer I have saved my shsh in tiny umbrella which says there is 4.0, 4.0.2, 4.1 and it says the same at the top of my Cydia front page I am using a pc with windows vista

Great. You have options. Because you have 5.14 BB, the only current unlock method is to update the BB to 6.15 and use Ultrasn0w. There is a small battery drain issue if you don't have an official carrier SIM to activated -- so keep that in mind. Best to find one for activation.

Now ... In order to get to 6.15 BB, the current beta5 version of redsn0w is used. For the best advice, please search for the latest posts by x98car or IYeow. They the real redsn0w experts and have helped 100's of users in the past 3 or 4 days.

hey Furi0n, I think that I will follow the same way that you dit but I have a doubt. My Iphone needs Hacktivations because I don't have the original Sim card. Will I be able to Hacktivate it using Redsnow? To install Ultrasnow first I will need to hactivate it to enter into the Iphone. Can anyone confirm that is it possible to hacktivate the Iphone using redsnow after using Pwanegtool to update to 4.2.1 without updating the baseband? Thanks!
