Hello everyone! It's been well over year since I lasted posted here on this great website. That said, I'm completely out of the loop in terms of my skills/knowledge on what to do for my Iphone.

I haven't backed up and re-jailbreaked my Iphone in almost 2 years. It lags bad and I can't load any apps from Cydia, etc. Now I want to do a fresh install all over again.

My questions are:

1. Is firmware 4.0 better than 3.0 or does it matter?

2. Am I able to upgrade to 4.0 and jaibreak/unlock using the latest itunes? (I just upgraded to W7 64bit and haven't installed itunes yet)

But how do I upgrade to 3.1.3? I just downloaded latest itunes and it's asking if I want to upgrade to 4.2

You download the 3.1.3 firmware yourself and shift restore to it in iTunes.

I downloaded the the firmware and unzipped it but I can't see the file when I try to shift restore.

I don't know which file exactly I have to change to .ipsw.

I have show hidden files on too.

You're not supposed to unzip. If it came as .zip all you do is rename the .zip to .ipsw

You dont need to show hidden file. You need to show extensions for known file types. That way you can rename it to .ipsw. Or you can just download it again with a different browser (firefox).

After searching around the site and reading threads till my eyes blur I think I know what to do, but before I mess up and loose my unlock can you confirm what I plan is correct?

3GS version 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01 JB with Spirit and unlock with Ultrasn0w.

I think I want to go to version 4.0 / 4.0.1 / 4.0.2

I have my SHSH for 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.1 stored locally and on Cydia (using Tiny Umbrella) and iSHSHHit.

I have downloaded PwnageTool and iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw and iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

Do I use PwnageTool to create the a custom .ipws?
Will this keep my base band?

After restore to custom via iTunes then JB using Jailbreakme, and unlock with Ultrasn0w?

PwnageTool will both preserve the unlock (baseband) AND jailbreak.

And optionally activate too Although it's always better to use an official SIM to activate.

Current on Tmo with 3GS, 5.13.04 6.4. Used TU to get back to 3.1.2 from 4.1. Was gotten from a friend that used cydia for SHSH. Have XP Pro and Win7 Ult x64.

Ok so 3GS got home button wet and now I am having more issues. Bought home button and its on its way BUT phone rebooted and now just has apple and sometimes reboots when it wants but got backup while it was doing this. Tried to use TU and itunes 9.0 to get 3.1.2 back up but keep getting error 3014 from itunes no matter what I try. <<<cant find alot of info on this issue.

Found one on craigslist that looks like its been on att for whole time without jailbreak. Need to know if I can get it to 3.1.? as i have heard 4.0-> runs slow or slows 3GS down.?

Can use TU. Can edit Commcenter, plist... Not a total noob but have read some much stuff that cant figure out straight answer. Or I may just be so frustrated that I cant see. Feel really lost without iphone, didnt think this thing was that much a part of my life.

Error 3014 means you arent getting through to Apple's/cydia/TU server.

You wont be able to download the craiglist one without SHSH

After a month of waiting, I unlocked it using the iPad 6.15.00 method.
However, the phone is incredibly slow and I would like to revert back to iOS 3.1.3.
I'm aware of the tiny umbrella method. But after I downgrade, will I get the 'SIM card not supported error?' How do I get rid of that? I'm from India and I can't have any AT&T SIMs.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm on a 3GS, 4.1(8B117) firmware, 05.14.02 baseband (I would like to unlock), I do not have any SHSH files (this phone has never been jailbroken or unlocked before), I have not used TinyUmbrella, I have the old Bootrom -[iBoot-395.3]; it was made in 2009 week 31. And I'm working with a WinXP machine.

It's my understanding that due to my 05.14.02 baseband, I would need to upgrade to the iPad 6.15 baseband to unlock, correct? I understand my GPS may not function properly after doing this.

Or, am I able to go back to 3.1.3 firmware (without any SHSHs)?

Do you recommend that I upgrade to 4.2.1 first or keep 4.1?

Will my unlock be untethered, since I have the Old Bootrom?

Would I use redsn0w to jailbreak, and then use untrasn0w via Cydia to unlock?

Should I back up my SHSH blobs/hashes/files first? And what's the difference between blobs, hashes, and files (maybe they are the same or I don't really need to know)???

I would suggest going to 4.2.1 first since you have the old bootrom so it will be untethered. Then yes, if you want to unlock you would have to update your baseband to the iPad one and you may lose gps.

And yes you should use tiny umbrella to save your SHSH. It doesnt matter if you do it first or not though.

Just use redsnow 0.9.4 to jailbreak after you go back down to 3.1.3. You wont need an ATT sim if you do that. You will need to point redsnow to a 3.1.2 firmware for it to work. You will also get a 1015 error when downgrading first to 3.1.3, just use tiny umbrella to kick out of recovery when you do.

4.2.1 is slow, especially on a 3G. As far as 4.2.1, is the battery getting warm and/or draining quickly? On 4.2.1 its best to activate with an official SIM. SAM will work but not everybody is satisfied. Even my 3GS is noticeably less responsive on 4.2.1 w/official SIM activated.
