redsnow or snowbreeze. If you are unlocking with a gevey then you dont need to jailbreak and can go to 5.1 using baseband preservation mode in snowbreeze or create a no baseband firmware with redsnow.
If you wish to jailbreak however you will need 5.0.1 SHSH if you want to go there and have a untethered jailbreak.

As a newbie in this realm. I found it difficult to know concretely which phone (type, model, firmware etc) was able to be jailbroken or even unlocked.

I have an iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.3.3 with BB - 05.16.02. I need to unlock the phone, but I'll have to upgrade to the iPad BB to do so on 4.3.3.
So I want to know if I upgrade to iOS 5.0.1, will it upgrade the BB to an unlockable one? or is there any other way to unlock the phone and avoid the iPad BB?

The iPhone is from a friend of mine... He just sended to me those infos, but he told me the iPhone was bought in London and we live in Brazil so I don't know if they can help us, i gonna try to figure out the Model # then I post here again! But thanks for the support!

If it is a UK phone normally the carriers there will unlock if for you. I would try that route first as it is a official unlock and wont break GPS. You always have the iPad baseband method if that proved to be a no go.
