It wouldn't be the same firmware and baseband if you chose AT&T. Verizon phones run 4.26.09 like you said. AT&T phones run firmware 4.2.1. They are also different in the fact that AT&T iPhones use GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. there is no SIM slot for the Verizon phone. The two devices are not interchangeable between carriers.

1: Go to settings-general-about and and scroll down until you see modem firmware.

    or

2: Download f0recast from here: iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones. Run it with your phone connected and it will tell you what baseband you have.

    or

3: Download Tiny Umbrella from here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella. Run it and click on your phone, you should see it under "installed baseband".

Use #2 or #3 if you are at the emergency screen and cannot access the phone.

Once you know what your baseband is you can check here if it can be unlocked:

    iPhone 3G/3GS

    Baseband Firmware Unlock

    4.26.08 3.0/3.0.1 Yes (Ultrasn0w)
    5.11.07 3.1/3.1.2 Yes (Ultrasn0w/blacksn0w)
    5.12.01 3.1.3 Yes (Ultrasn0w)
    5.13.04 4.0/4.0.2/4.0.3 yes (Ultrasn0w)
5.14.02 4.1 None *See below on how to unlock if here
5.15.04 4.2.1 None *See below on how to unlock if here
6.15.00 Custom Firmware or redsnow method yes (Ultrasn0w)
    iPhone 4

    Baseband Firmware Unlock

    1.59.00 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 Yes (Ultrasn0w)
    2.10.04 4.1 None
    3.10.01 4.2.1 None

Baseband Cannot be downgraded unless you have a iPhone 3G that has a 5.8 bootloader. f0recast/tiny umbrella can tell you if you do. If you are lucky enough to have this then you can use Fuzzyband in cydia to downgrade your baseband.

Guesstimate of when new unlocks will come out:

iPhone 3G/3GS: Should be a few days after 4.2/4.2.1 comes out.
iPhone 4: No info on release but progress has been made so should be sometime after 3G/3GS unlock comes out.

    Important For Unlockers

Baseband can be preverved when updating two ways:

    1. Restoring to custom firmwares made with pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze. Tutorials can be found here::
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] iPhone 3GS Pwnage Tool (Mac)

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] iPhone 4 Pwnage Tool (Mac)
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Using a Custom Restore IPSW and RedSn0w (Windows) Redsn0w & Pwnage Tool Use if you don't have a Mac but dont want to use Sn0wbreeze. You will need to obtain a pwnage tool made custom firmware yourself. We cannot post links to custom firmware here. Google is your friend. (Windows)
HOW TO: Jailbreak iOS 4.1 with Sn0wbreeze 2.1 Sn0wbreeze (Windows)
(note sn0wbreeze has some issues on iPhone 3G right now so a pwnage tool custom firmware should be used for them.)

    2. Using Tiny Umbrella to preserve baseband during restore. This method only works on iPhone 4. Do not attempt with any other iDevice. Tutorial can be found here:
iPhone 4.1 Upgrade: Retain Original Baseband Unlock [Tutorial] | The Apple Press (note they are using a older version of tiny umbrella in this tutorial but the steps are the same with the new one, just some buttons have been moved around). DO NOT USE THIS METHOD TO TRY GOING TO 4.2.1 ON IPHONE 4. Apple has a new baseband verification with this firmware meaning tiny umbrella's kick out of recovery will not work (you will get error 1013 and have to restore to 4.1).

For people stuck on Baseband 5.14.02 and 5.15.04

There is a way for you to unlock now using a method of updating your baseband with a custom firmware made with pwnage tool or by using redsnow to update the baseband for you. For full info using this method read here VERY carefully: Dev-Team Blog

Tutorials for using pwnage tool to update baseband so that you can unlock can be found here:
iPhone 3G: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.2.1]

    Redsn0w method:
HOW TO: RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 To Unlock Your iPhone 3G/3Gs With Tricky New Ultrasn0w [Mac & Windows] | FSMdotCOM

Unlockers should use custom firmware or Tiny umbrella method (iPhone 4 only) 99% of the time when updating/restoring. The only exception is when it is confirmed that the latest firmware has a baseband that can be unlocked. (Thx blkcadi & Mes )
After reading #2 in Important for Unlockers section above, does this mean I cant upgrade to 4.2.1 and jailbreak/unlock my iphone 4 for Tmobile?

Currently running 4.0.1, jailbroken/unlocked on Tmobile. Ran Tiny Umbrella and have the following SHSH saved:

    4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.2b3, 4.3b2, 4.3b3.

    Thanks,

If you have cydia install bootneuter. If not you can use redsnow 0.9.4 to jailbreak and unlock that on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3.

Is there any drawback of hacktivating with Redsnow. You have previosly told that this can lead to issues with push notifications and battery drain.

I own a 3GS with 3.1.3 fw, 5.12.1 bb, newbootrom, spirit jb & ultrasnow unlock.

Planning to upgrade to 4.1 (since 4.1 seems unteethered) with Redsnow 0.9.6rc8 and custom firmware iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw without upgrading the baseband. I don't have the original AT&T sim.

    Thank you.

You can use SAM to fix the hactivating issues.

Also you can go to 4.2.1 untethered now with pwnage tool 4.2 or snowbreeze 2.2

    Ok, thanks.

Do you know wheter I should choose "Baseband Preservation Mode" or Expert mode for both activation and keeping baseband unchaged. "Baseband Preservation Mode" doesn't seems to include activation option (I read in another forum.) and don't know whether Expert mode keeps baseband.

    Thank you very much

I am not too familiar with that baseband preservation mode you are talking about. AFAIK it should preserve your baseband just using expert mode.

Only if you install the iPad baseband. Unless you have a 5.8 bootloader iPhone 3G. All this is explained in the first post.
