Does redsnow create a custom IPSW that is able to preserve the baseband for iOS 4.1? If so, has that changed in last 2 weeks? Just wondering why I didn't go that route in the first place...

No redsnow does not preserve baseband or make custom firmware. Pwnage tool and sn0wbreeze make custom firmware and preserve baseband.

Redsn0w is just a jailbreak tool and does not restore nor create custom firmware. Nothing about the principle use of redsn0w has changed.

understood.. it's all making sense now! Is there a big jailbreaking/unlocking info page where this type of stuff is laid out? I feel like an *** asking all these questions that seems pretty basic, but I haven't been able to find this info elsewhere... I mean, I can follow a "this is how to jailbreak with limerain" tutorial no problem. But the info I now have on redsn0w from this post (it's a jailbreak tool, doesn't create nor restore firmware and can be used to put a phone into pwned dfu mode) is great to know. Thanks again for all the help!
