Default Noob to unlocking, do I need to preserve BB?

Helping a friend unlock/JB his iPhone 3GS on 4.1. Currently it's running 4.0.1, does he need to do anything to preserve his baseband before updating and JB'ing on 4.1 in order to be able to unlock with ultrasnow? (Baseband: 5.13.04) Thanks!

You would need to use pwnage tool to make a custom 4.1 and restore to that to preserve the baseband.

Yes, you need to do an upgrade with TinyUmbrella to preserve the baseband or else you can't unlock it.
Who the hell thanked me? And why?????

No, that method of using tiny umbrella only works on iPhone 4. It does not preserve baseband on a 3g/3GS. A custom 4.1 firmware is his only option tight now.
