Newbie to Jailbreaking/Unlocking

I have a iPhone 3gs and iPhone 4, I jailbroke the 3GS with limera1n and I am wondering what I need to do to know whether my phone is unlocked so I can use it with any cell phone provider?
I am also curious as to whether or not my iPhone 4 should be jailbroken? I am woried that screwing with such an exspensive peice of hardware is a smart idea? I like the things that jailbreaking alows me to do.

If you know anyone with another sim from a different provider try their sim in yours to see. As for jailbreaking, you cannot do anything a simple restore will not take care of so it isnt much of a risk.

You did not say if you ran ultrasn0w after the jailbreak. Limera1n does not unlock the phone it only jailbreaks it. The unlock is done with a Cydia app called ultrasn0w which is in repo666. You will only be able to unlock the 3GS if you have baseband 5.13.x or lower if you have 5.14.x you cannot.

Or it could be a factory unlocked iphone.
