iphone 4 - iPhone as a gift in Apple store - ACTIVATION?

next week I will make a holiday in NY.
I would like to buy a iphone 4 in the apple store in this way:
"For those who are not eligible for an early upgrade or who wish to buy iPhone as a gift, the prices are $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)"

is it possible? this iphone has a sim card AT&T to activate?
I do not want the contract and I will unlock (when i can do it).

You can get it as a gift at the apple store. Just make sure you have your credit card/debit card ready.

and what about activation? the iphone will have a microsim AT&T to activate it without contract?
