So in other words, point me in the right direction!

You can only use it on the official carrier that is gsm. Or unlock it for another gsm carrier. Sprint is a CDMA network.

How to tell:
iPhone 2G: Looks like this -

iPhone 3G: Looks like this -

iPhone 3GS: It looks exactly like the 3G. You can see the difference if you open up the camera app; if there is an option to switch between pictures and video, it is a 3GS. Also, hold down the home button; if a voice control pop up comes up, it's a 3GS.
As for the unlock, you have to check if you have an unlockable baseband. Go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware. What does it say here? If it says 5.14.02, you're out of luck and your iPhone cannot be unlocked.
Otherwise, if you're already jailbroken, navigate to Cydia, then go to Mange > Sources > Add > http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
Then search for ultrasn0w and install that. That should unlock your iPhone for you.Last edited by dotFIVE; 10-19-2010 at 03:26 PM.

JREED, you need to update the baseband to 6.15.00 which may break your GPS.
You may also never be able to restore to a stock firmware.
If you would like to proceed, you will need redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 and a stock 4.3.2 ipsw. Run redsn0w and select to update the baseband.

Yeah the unlock for not just the 3G/3GS but also the iPhone 4 have no made any progress for a long time now. It might not be happening any time soon. Nobody knows for sure.
