How does sn0wbreeze preserve baseband?

Title says it, just curious how this is accomplished, does it remove/change something from the firmware or block something from itunes being put in when the restore is happening? I fear updating my 3gs and losing the unlock that I have, just curious how exactly it works w/ the baseband updates.

i believe the custom firmware removes the baseband update in the ipsw package.
