Unlock iphone getting locked again? Help!

I am using an unlocked/jailbroken 2nd generation iphone and accidentally downloaded the newest version of itunes and in the process seemed to have updated my phone as well. Now all I get is a screen that shows me to connect my phone to itunes except itunes does not recognize that my phone is connected. It will also only allow me to make an emergency call. I have removed my SIM card and attempted to restore my phone using the power and home buttons to only have the same screen appear again. I am a student studying abroad and really need this phone to work so please please help!

The second generation iphone was the iphone 3G. Is that what you have or do you have the first gen (silver aluminum back)?

I'm sorry- the first generation. 4GB silver back with the black portion across the bottom

You probably went to 3.1.3. So you just need to activate probably. You can use redsn0w to do that:
redsn0w 0.9.2 [iPhone Dev Team]

You will also need the 3.1.2 firmware to point redsn0w to when you open it:
