3G on IOS4, Too slow, what to do?

Hey All,
I recently was given an old iPhone 3g (05.13.04) the other day and I immediately JB and Unlocked it to ios 4.0.1. I didn't really do my homework and found out that ios4 on 3g's is so slow. I am residing in canada and use Fido, with no data. What would be the best option for me? Can I go up to ios4.1 or should I go back down to 3.1.3? Can I even unlock it at 3.1.3?

If you go into settings and turn all the things under spotlight search off it should make itnalot faster if you want to stay on ios 4 and im pretty sure ultrasnow unlockes 4.0.1 on 3g lmk ur results

You can either go to 4.1 or go back down to 3.1.3. Both are quicker than 4.0-4.0.2.

To go to 4.1, you'd create a custom firmware with Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 (must download stock 4.1 ipsw to do so) then shift+restore to the custom fw to get up to 4.1 jailbroken. You don't need to do a regular restore prior to restoring to the custom fw. If you run into any errors during your restore to the custom fw, simply use iReb to bypass. You can get iReb and Sn0wbreeze at iH8sn0w.com

If you want to go to 3.1.3, you'll need both the stock 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 ipsw. You will then shift+restore to the 3.1.3 ipsw then use Redsn0w 0.9.4 (point at the 3.1.2 ipsw to make the jb work).

Edit: to better help you decide which fw you'd like to go to, consider this:

1) 4.1 fixes iOS 4 lag on 3G, but is slightly (very slightly) slower than 3.1.3.
2) 4.1 has the new features such as native multitask, folders, and wallpaper. Native multitask can be disabled after jailbreak in Cydia to reduce lag (if any).
3) 3.1.3 lacks what 4.1 has but is a bit quicker. Some Cydia apps also don't work on 4.x so all Cydia apps will work on 3.1.3.

Tried turning everything under spotlight search off, didn't help at all really I found. Going to 4.1 sounds like a slightly simpler choice. I am on a Mac, so can someone please point me towards the correct downloads that I need?

If you need an unlock, the best way to go is to use Snowbreeze 2.0.2 for windows, you can create it in windows and transfer the ipsw to Mac to be restored. This way it will preserve your baseband to unlock with Ultrasn0w.

What jailbreak did you use on 4.0.1 ?

To go to 4.1, Download Snowbreeze 2.0.2 and Ireb 4.1 from here : iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones.
Download the 3G , stock 4.1 ipsw.
Build your Custom firmware of 4.1.
Now run ireb 4.1 Online mode, follow the instructions,
Now do the Shift + Restore to the custom fw 4.1 which you have just built.

There's an unofficial pwnagetool (dunno how stable that is tho) for Mac to go to 4.1. You need the unlock?

Cuz the new Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 can jb 3G on stock 4.1, but that's only if you don't need an unlock...

If this way doesn't work, then you have to downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.4 first.
Run Ireb 4.1 to put your iphone into recoery mode
Do the Shift + Restore to custom 4.1 ipsw.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w again.

Ended up using pwnagetool and 4.1 pwnagetool bundle. Worked perfect. No errors. Then unlocked with ultrasnOw. Easy as pie and way faster. Thanks for the help guys!
