My iphone 3G with 4.0.1 OS is jailbroken and unlocked, however, when I put in an ATT sim card in it will not find the network(searching......), does this phone needs activation according to what I read on line? and so is there a way to activate the phone without ATT ?

Your baseband was upgraded. Currently there is no unlock for that baseband. We also do not know when the next unlock will be released. You can check Fuzzyband from Cydia to see if you have bootloader 5.08 to downgrade the baseband. It's a small chance but you can try.
