So are you able to get to the homescreen? Sorry, I'm just not certain as to which way you are meaning "unactivated and locked."

Look int he forums for AnnieX.... I forget her full name. She's definitely one of the go to people on the site for setting up phones for 3rd party carriers. There's a guy that can help just as much but his name slips my mind at the moment.

It's factory unlocked then? The SIM should activate it just fine. Do you get any sort of error when inserting your SIM?
I'd highly recommend purchasing a universal activation SIM. it's not very expensive.
But just tell me this, what happens when you plug your phone into your comp and open iTunes, then insert your SIM card?

Try popping the simcard in any other phone, it doesn't necessarily have to be an iPhone; any phone you have laying around will do. It could just be a problem with the sim card itself.

It sounds to me like the iPhone is locked if you are getting that message. I would follow Annie's advice and try to get hold of a phonebook/universal sim to activate it.

You can also download f0recast and run it with your iPhone plugged into your pc. It can tell you what firmware the iPhone has on it even if not activated. http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/welcome.snow

I find it odd that Apple says it's not locked to any network, but it is if it isn't going to activate with any SIM.
Call Apple again and ask again. Any SIM should work if it is a factory unlocked phone.
Otherwise, get a hold of a universal activation SIM or since you're on 3.1.x a phonebook SIM will work too.
You did plug it into iTunes right? Cuz you didn't answer me the first time.

I'm sorry I don't want to be persistent but I need to know if you plugged the phone into iTunes with your SIM in.
You can't use Spirit until you activate the phone. Which then we come back to the whole get a universal activation SIM if you can't figure out what carrier the phone is locked to.Last edited by i.Annie; 09-27-2010 at 10:21 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
