France to USA Possible?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area but, I recently got an apple iphone 32GB in a box of junk I got on ebay. The phone was in a box and seemed unopened. It turns on and everything after charge.

I have tried the best I can to I guess "Unlock" the phone so that I could then "JailBreak" the phone.

I was wondering if someone could take the time to walk me through this process if it is possible to use this phone in the states.

My fiancée currently has an iPhone 16GB through AT%T that has some wear and tear. I wanted to upgrade her and get her into a phone thats in better shape.

I use gtalk, msn, im on irc, I also use ventrilo, teamspeak, shockvoice and many other lines of communication if it makes it any easier. Thanks.

The phone is currently stuck in the "Emergency Call" Screen.
I guess its a 3G[S]

if you put the ATT sim into the phone, and plug it into iTunes does it say not supported carrier?

I thought iPhones in france were factory unlocked

I am not sure if it was unlocked already, and yes it did have a sim card in it.

When I turned it on for the first time with the original sim card it took me to the emergency call screen.

Unfortunately not

With the AT&T sim card I get the same emergency call window.
