OK, you came to the right place. Here is the process:
    1. Download Spirit from Spiritjb.com
    2. Plug your iPhone into your computer
    3. Run Spirit.exe
    4. Boot your phone
Jailbreak done! Post back once you've gotten that far.

OK that's fine, you can still follow the same process only download the Mac version, which will be a .dmg instead.

If you have a 3G use RedSn0w from redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team] but when it asks for yor ipsw use the 4.0 ipsw from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw
Then add repo666.UltraSn0w.com in cydia and add UltraSn0w to unlock.

Agreed. You'll run into problems with the newer version of ITunes and Spirit won't hackitivate (activate without iTunes and the original carriers sim) your phone if you ever have to restore.

You could always use blackra1n, it's simple. It has a jailbreak and an unlock (Blacksn0w) all in one. The unlock will work on your baseband. Just make sure you got a wifi connection because you download the unlock through your iPhone. Blackra1n will show up as an app on your springboard. Either will work just fine though.

But only RedSn0w works with 4.02

Yes, but he can upgrade if he doesn't want to stay on such old FW

True but 4.x.x is extremely sluggish on a 3G and original iPhone, even on stock. Also you really don't get any of the features unless you add them and then it is way way too sluggish.

Personally I would stick to 3.1.2 and just download blackra1n from blackra1n.com.
Its a one click jailbreak, fast and simple. Id recommend it to any new comers in jailbreaking.

    I use 4.02 with RefdSn0w
BlackRa1n is not to be recommended for the 3G due to the fact that it exacerbates the existing race condition which causes a loss of WiFi in up to 10% of phones, RedSn0w is a far safer option.

    Touche.

So 4.0 runs pretty well on your 3G? All the people I know say its slow.
Then again all the people I know with 3G's don't know what they're doing. Lol

If you do it right it is almost as quick as 3.xx - if you do it wrong it is very, very slow.
A clean restore and don't install any of the 'extras' and it's fine.

I bet we just confused the heck out this guy.
Im sorry OP just do what confuscious said.

So its: A fresh restore to 4.0.2
Set up as new phone. No backups!
    Download redsn0w and 4.0 ispw(firmware).
Open redsn0w and follow the instructions.
(Dont select enable multitasking or homescreen wallpaper unless you want a slow iPhone.)
When ask for firmware version point to the saved 4.0 ispw.
(From here down you need an internet connection on your iPhone)
When jailbreak is done open up cydia.
    Update cydia files if prompted.
    Search for ultrasn0w on cydia.
    Install ultrasn0w.
    Complete.
