How to Activate iphone4?

I got 2 unativated att sim cards but when i put either in it gives me sim card not supported. i bought this off ebay and seller is no longer resgistered. is it possible that its locked to another carrier? or did my sim cards die?

Are you in the "Connect to itunes" screen? If you have the original simcards that came with the IP4's, you can use those to bypass the "Connect to itunes" screen. Just connect to itunes and let it do its job and follow the instructions (MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT UPDATE TO THE NEW FIRMWARE). It will say that the phone is not yet activated and it might take a while but once you unlock the IP4 using ultrasn0w, it will activate the IP4.

But my question is, doesn't itunes force you to update software when you activate a new phone on it? I was under the assumption that itunes would either force you to update or not activate?
