Default 3GS iPhone trying to unlock, insert sim?

Do I need to use an AT&T Sim card to get this going? Or can I use a t-mobile sim card?

Also, I have an AT&T sim card but it's not activated will that work just to install firmware to get it going?

Yup, it'll work (if the iPhone is from AT&T).

    Phone from AT&T vs Apple?

    What if it's from Apple?

Can I use an old AT&T Sim card to get it going?

The phone can't be /from Apple/ - it is only purchaseable from a phone company (at least last time I heard). An old sim card will work fine.

I stuck in a buddies Sim Card from his 3GS from AT&T and hooked it up to itunes and then it activated it and then pulled the sim card out. It worked.
