download blackra1n (blackra1n.com), jaibreak your phone , that would install blacksn0w run it and you have unlocked 3.1.2 phone, i'm sure you can do it with Spirit, but sn0w was my method and worked like a charm...

Hm yes a 3GS with a new boot you probably dont wanna use Blackra1n. Really need to specify if its a 2G 3G or 3GS.

Regardless of what phone it is, if you are on 3.1.2 it is best to use Spirit to jb and install ultrasn0w via Cydia to unlock it just like Cerote said.

I would use blackrain rather than spirit on a 3GS It's easier to go to 4.0 if required via cfw.

The question was actually how to unlock and the answer is ultrasn0w.

True, however, it is a tethered jailbreak on a 3GS if it has the new boot. If SHSH files are backed up, Id say go ahead with Spirit to avoid the tethered. If OP wants to go up to 4.0, simply restore with SHSHs, jailbreak with blackra1n then go on up to 4.0.

Edit: as I pressed post I realized my mistake haha. New boot phones cant jailbreak on 4.0 right now so correction: until the 4.0 jb for 3GS is out this is an option. But since new boot phones cant go up yet, might as well use Spirit right now.

    ^^ Doesn't snowbreeze 1.7 give new boots a tethered 4.0 jailbreak?

I think Ive heard of that :/ not sure if anybody would want a tethered JB though. Not even sure if new boot phones can use custom firmwares. Anybody can clarify this?

Oh ok I get it now. I Googled :P

It must have been jailbroken before on 3.1.x to be able to jailbreak 4.0 with Sn0wbreeze 1.7. If its brand new with iOS 4, no SHSH blobs, and never JB before then it cant JB on 4.0 right now.

This very short question has raised a long thread!

Snowbreeze does give tethered jailbreaks on 4.0. But we don't know whether the question is refering to new/old bootrom. Maybe they are already JB. Maybe they are on 3.1.2 and want to get to 4.0?? Who knows. Maybe it's 2G even?

Too many permutations. Simple answer I guess is to use spirit and ultrasnow, as already suggested, as it covers all bases - so long as you don't want to upgrade (even then there's spirit2pwn!)........

Wait a minute.... I thought a jb 3GS on old boot with ios4 couldn't be tethered???? If this isn't the case can somebody point me to a helpfully thread or tell me what I need to do? It was originally 3.1.3 spirit jb but I used the work-around in order to get jb ios 4 installed. Tethering WAS working but stopped last week and I was under the impression that I would have to downgrade to 3.1.3 (don't have 3.1.2 shsh) in order to get tethering to work again.

Internet tethering is working on os4 on mine no problem.

Have you got the settings right in network? If tethering doesn't show there then google unlockit.co.nz

Btw, we were discussing something completely different above!

I think you have "tethering" and "tethered jb" mixed up. They are two different things entirely.

We were talking about tethered JB which means everytime your phone reboots or shuts off, you have to run the jailbreak tool again to let you access your springboard again.
