Using iPhone 2G with no SIM card

I pulled my carrier SIM out and dont have the service any longer and I don't like keeping it in because it searches for service. I am somewhat aware that there are dummy sims for developers. So is there anyway for me to hide or remove the NO SIM that shows up where the carrier logo and stat should be on the taskbar? I tried using a carrier logo but those don't work. Came across something about tweaking a plist somewhere. Does anyone know of this? Can a plist tweek also eliminate the SIM popup window?

whats the big deal with just whacking in a pay as you go sim in ? either that or just put up with the "no sim"
