Default iphone 3G on OS 2.2.1 - need help with updating and unlocking with non-AT&T sim

I have an old iphone 3G on version 2.2.1(obviously old bootrom) jailbroken and unlocked being used by a friend who has no access to an AT&T sim. He would like to update the phone to iOS 4 and jailbreak and unlock it so that he can use it with his current sim.

I have read through a lot of guides and threads but couldn't find this exact situation. The trouble I have is that when itunes updates the phone to Os 4, it reboots and checks with Apple to activate it, which wouldn't work without the AT&T sim. This phone needs to be unlocked to be of any use to him.

    1) Is it possible to update and unlock this phone without an AT&T sim ?
    2) If so, then can I use redsnow to update and jailbreak ?
    3) Will redsnow activate the phone without an AT&T sim as it's no use to him locked?

Any help would be really appreciated.

PS : He has now way of getting an AT&T sim as he is half way around the world.

    Thanks
    /JP

    1. yes
    2. yup
    3. yea

Basically he needs to restore his phone to 4.0, and use the latest redsn0w, which will hacktivate and jailbreak it.

then just install ultrasn0w. reset network settings if needed
The only thing I ask in return for helping, is that you click the thanks button, Thanks!
