    Default Is iclarified wrong here??

    According to clarified.com

"If you have a iPhone 3GS made before week 40 (2009) currently you can perform a jailbreak using pwnagetool or redsn0w. The week number is usually the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number. iPhones manufactured after week 40 cannot be jailbroken as of yet on 4.0.0"

Is this true, or only if the 3GS to be used has the old bootrom?

    And does redsn0w work on a 3GS running 4.0?

Imy research leads me to believe the above statement is either wrong. Or only partially correct.

    Anyone have an opinion/insight?

    Thanks!

If the quoted language is accurate, this might make a few thousand people very happy

They are correct. Those dates before have old bootrom. Only the old bootrom can take a custom firmware. Which means that it is the only one of the 3GS to move to 4.0 jailbroken. New bootrom will have to wait for a newer 4.0 jailbreak.

And by the weeks above they are the weeks of 2009 not 2010 models.

    Default Interesting

How do we know if we have an 09 or 10 model?

Also, any news on a new bootrom 4.0 jailbreak?

The third digit in your serial. If it is an 9 then it is 2009 and if it is an 0 then it is 2010.

You sure it is the new bootrom? Also is it a refurb?

Pretty sure. I did the check and had the 539.3.2 number (or whatever the new bootrom number is). Could be refurbished. I dunno for sure

Does you serial number have a letter or a number in the second spot? A letter generally (most cases) means refurb.

Ok. I tried to check but couldn't find anything listing the bootrom using that method. I used a different method last time I checked it.

There was no "device instance path" option to look at.

    Any other thoughts??

I'll recheck the bootrom tomorrow and get back to you. I have to find the method I used last time. But I'm sure it was 595.3.2.

Any news about a new jailbreak/unlock on the horizon??

    Thanks cerote

OK, so i just checked on my home computer, which works much better, and confirmed that despite being an 09 phone, with a week 25 build, i'm on the new bootrom.

    how is that possible?

any news on a jailbreak unlock for me yet?

    dwade:
    1. plug your phone into your computer and start itunes
    2. turn off your phone once you plug it in
    3. leave it plugged in and put it in dfu mode (from an off state, hold both buttons for exactly 10 seconds, then release the top button, but keep holding the bottom button (home) until itunes gives you a message)(screen should be black, if you have anything on your screen at this point, start over.)
    4. go into your devise manager, select USB controllers, then select the apple mobile device, then go to the properties tab, and select "device instance path" from the dropdown menu. read the contents all the way to the end. it will say Boot and a number. if it's 359.3, you're good. if its 359.3.2, you have the new bootrom

You will have to patiently wait like many, many of us for the official ios4 jailbreak. UNLESS you are still on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. If you are on one of those operating systems on your 3GS, SAVE THE SHSH BLOBS.... GET UMBRELLA TO DO IT.

Then, get one of any number of "how to" guides on jailbreaking 3.1.2 on a 3GS. iClarified.com is usually a good place to get a tutorial.
