3gs locked to AT&T

Hi,
I bought a 3GS 16 GB 3.1.3(old bootrom 359.3) iphone on ebay from an American seller.It has never been jailbroken and is locked to AT&T.

When switched on it asks for a valid sim to activate therefore only allows emergency calls.
Can I jailbreak and unlock for use on UK Vodafone?

Do I need to buy an AT&T 3GS sim card on ebay before I can do anything?

I'm a complete novice, any guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Yes, you do at the moment, it is better to have one anyway, doesn't cost much

Any sim. There is no unique to 3GS sim.
