my friend has the iphone 3g and wants to jailbreak and not unlock, bc he is currently alrdy with at&t. any auggestions on how we should go about jailbreaking it? or would doing it just be plain dumb? please helpp

You can use Redsn0w 0.9.5b5 to jailbreak your friend's iOS 4.0.
While running Redsn0w, you need to point it to 3G 4.0 ipsw, make sure you know where you have downloaded it.
It is not plain dumb, it is a matter of personal preference.

no it will stay the same it will add only cydia apps

Just sync it back in Itunes if he set it up as a new Iphone, but if you restore from backup , you will have all the music and contacts again.

sorry but this is my last question... what do you guys think about the spirit jailbreak, would it work or should i just stick to using redsn0w

If I were you, I would stick to Redsn0w, With Blackra1n and Spirit jailbreak, if you do a reset all settings, you will be stuck at Apple logo or probably the spinning wheels. I have no problems doing reset on Redsn0w or any Custom Firmware. Unfortunately, new bootrom has to use Spirit if they want untethered jailbreak. There has been issues whereby after Spirit jailbreak, unlock with Ultrasn0w do not unlock as what it should do. I have no idea what it is doing this and I can't answer it either.

thanks dude, i just jailbroke it for him successfully using redsn0w everythings fine and his contacts and music are still there. thanks again
