iphone 3gs ios4 won't jailbreak with pwnage tool

so the problem is that the phone was upgraded to 4.0ios. pwnage tool created a custom firmware and when I try to install the ipsw, i put the phone on recovery screen (connect to itunes) but when i press to restore it says preparing iphone for restore and then it just hangs there forever. any ideas? I believe this iphone is the old boot... oh wait i got error 1604. any ideas?

Did you restore to Stock 4.0 or to Custom 4.0 ?

No , you can't restore to custom firmware, it just won't work.
