Seems like you have to activate it first.
You need a sim card from the original provider, just to connect it to iTunes (2 min)

You may be able to jailbreak it instead, but I would recommend activating first, then jailbreaking.

You can use any ATT SIM. A friends, A go phone SIM or even an inactive one.

i put in a friends sim and it tried to take me thru the entire rate plan setup? wat do i do, i just wanna use the phone with my tmobile service

put in the sim and connect it to itunes. Its pretty simple from there on. When its done go into settings on your iphone and then general>about and tell us what you have under version and under modem firmware

When you are at emergency screen, don't plug into the computer, just put the sim in and reboot, it wiil bring you from Emergency screen inot springboard or Home screen, then you can go from there, whatever you want to do.
