buying a friend's old 3gs
alright, so my friend's getting the new iphone 4 on the 24th and is selling me his 3gs. currently i don't have a data plan and would like to keep it that way. i have wifi 75% of the time and a data plan would be a waste of money. it would be ideal if i could shut off all access to the 3g network all together to prevent accidental usage.
so now that you know a little background, i have quite a few questions.
first of all, i'm having him upgrade to 4.0 tomorrow in hopes of an unlock becoming available, is this wise, or should i have him leave it a 3.1.3 with the un-unlockable baseband? will i even need to unlock it in order to use it? (we're both on at&t)and what will i need to do in order to block out all access to the 3g network?
thanks in advance,
cudder
edit: he currently uses the phone 100% legit. not jailbroken or anything

You should just leave it at version 3.1.3 until an unlock is out.
If you do not subscribe to data plan, you do not need to worry about being charge for data usage even if you have it turned on, you are not going to be able to surf over 3g. In other words , you do need to block it.

so i won't have to worry about at&t detecting the phone and automatically putting me on a data plan? and will i even need to unlock it in order to use it?
sorry if i'm asking a lot a questions lol. i've got an ipod touch and it's about as jailbroken and custom as possible, but iphones seem to be an entirely different animal and i just want to be sure of things.

If you are using AT&T carrier and your iPhone is from US, you don't need to unlock it. it is already unlocked for AT&T .

If your using a iPhone atat will detect and they will send you a text message give you the appropriate data plan you have to have it no matter what. I tried many times cancelling it but never worked
Atat has upgraded their servers so anyone that didn't have data for iPhone it the past has it now the cheapest data plan is 15$ 200MB for 1 monthLast edited by winvargh; 06-20-2010 at 08:44 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

so there's no way around the data plan other than switching to t-mobile?

Exactly. The cheapest data you can get from atat is the 15$ plan.

I think $15 data plan is reasonable

.....especially when you're around wifi 75% of the time.
That way, you get 100% internet connection, and you probably don't have to worry about going over 200MB

Or, just jb and install sbsettings. You can toggle off all data connections.

My family has been using 3 Iphones with standard plans for a few months now and they have only caught one of us so far. They tagged on the 30 dollar unlimited plan to our account. I will switch that one to the new 15 dollar plan since it won't see much data useage outside of wifi area. My other two phones have the 10 dollar unlimited family data plan and so far they haven't changed them over yet. I'm thinking any day now though. We did not get a text message just an email stating our plan had been updated and to call customer service for details.
