Can I activate my iphone 3gs with prepaid sim

Any one can tell me if my iphone is not activated yet as i have no offcial carrier sim comes with that iphone so can i use prepaid sim from the same carrier to activate my phone or not any one experinced this...

i can confirm... I hae an AT&T iphone and i am in Canada.. i purchased a sim on ebay, stuck it in and voila it activated ( i didn't even have to put any credit on the sim)
