Syncing and Unlocking 2g
Okay, just get an 8gb 2g iphone today and I would like to unlock because I have t-mobile. I plan to use these steps:
How to Jailbreak/Unlock 3.1.3 iPhone 2G Windows & OS X
However, when I plug in the phone to sync to itunes, it needs an AT&T sim card (all I have is T-mobile). Is there a way to bypass so I can do the first step of putting 3.1.3 on the phone?
Thanks,
Heath

I always point people to this guide:
For Windows: How to Jailbreak/Unlock 3.1.3 iPhone 3GS/3G/2G iPod Touch 2G/1G with sn0wbreeze Windows
Or for OSX: http://modmyi.com/guides/how-jailbre...nagetool-os-x/

Well this leads me to another question... I don't know what firmware is currently on the phone. How do I tell? I have a feeling this guy I bought it from upgraded to 3.1.3 already because he said the phone was previously unlocked and he updated and now it isn't.

The 2G does not matter. Apple stopped updating it's baseband a while ago. To unlock it there is a quick instruction at the bottom of the guide I posted. So just follow the guide and it will get you to where you need to go; no matter what firmware it is on.

Okay thank you so much! I still however need to sync the phone to itunes before I begin though, right? How do I do this without an ATT sim card?

You don't need to sync iPhone to iTunes, just run redsn0w 0.9.4 and follow instructions from there

Okay, then how do I know what firmware I am running?
Or does it not matter...
At the beginning of the guide, it says that it is required that the phone has already been jailbroken before, and that you are running 3.1.2.
Is this true?Last edited by HeathAU25; 06-15-2010 at 07:42 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Well, if it was previously unlocked it would have had to have been jailbroken (you can't have the former without the latter).
As to which fw, just restore to 3.1.3 and then follow this guide for Redsn0w.... CLICKY.

Remember when you are at emergency screen and you plug your iphone , Itunes will say the sim card is not supported, don't worry about that issue. Now Redsn0w will take over, leaving your Iphone still pluged in, run Redsn0w and perform all the necessary procedure to jailbreak and unlock. Uncheck the already pwned feature, it will take atleast five minutes to finish jailbreaking and unlock for you. Using Redsn0w is all about hactivating , jailbreaking and unlocking for you.
Once it is done, Itunes will recognize your Iphone and then you can sync again.
Files you need : If you are already at 2G, 3.1.3 , then you only need
2G , 3.1.2 ipsw
Redsn0w 0.9.4
BL 3.9 and BL 4.6
That is it.
