Unlocking iPhone 3G

I tried to learn if/how to do this myself, but was unable to figure out if I can or not.

I have an iPhone 3G. I am planning to buy a new 4th Gen when it comes out and I hoped to unlock the existing 3G version. A few questions:

I plan to give the unlocked 3G to my dad who currently uses a prepaid T mobile sim. He doesn't plan to buy a data plan so basically he would use it as a ipod touch with a phone (i.e. would only get data via wifi). Is this possible?

Next, if the above will even work, is my phone unlockable?

I think it is updated as far a phone can be updated.

modem firmware 05.12.01

if I cannot unlock and need to wait for a new tool to unlock, can i jailbreak or will that ruin my ability to unlock later?

Use Spirit jailbreak and use it as an Ipod Touch since it cannot be unlocked. Jailbreaking now will not lose the ability to jailbreak in future.

You cannot unlock an Iphone without jailbreaking it. The tools to unlock is found in the third party software after jailbreaking . I hope this will clear things up for you......
