Help getting O2 unlock code

Hi
I bought my iPhone 3g on ebay last year.
found out it's an O2 UK phone. Now O2 is offering free unlocking
for the iPhone. But I can't request the unlock because
I'm not the original owner of the phone (and don't have his name or iPhone phone number etc...).
Is there a way out of this without emailing the guy and asking him to do it ?

Carrier O2 might be able to officially unlock it for you for a fee. You can call them up to find out. One guy who has subscribed to the official carrier of O2 had it officially unlock for Euro 25.00.
