So i have an iPhone 3gs w/ 3.1.2 FW and 5.11.07 BB
but i bought it used and it's still activated from the last users SIM card, therefore mine gets no service. It is already JB'd.

I ask, what do i do?

if i restore will it update my BB and I lose the unlock?

i humbly ask for someone to show me the way.

If you update you will lose the JB and wont be able to unlock.
If you get no service maybe you need to unlock it, JB is not the same as unlock.

it was already jailbroken and i just downloaded blacksn0w so it should be unlocked as well.

In itunes it's offering a "carrier update" which i'll hold out from d/ling until i hear back from here if that's also a problem.

You'll have to create or download custom firmware. Stick with 3.1.2. This will not upgrade your baseband when you restore, and you will still be able to unlock.

Okay I appreciate the help so far.

So here's my plan and feel free to correct me.

1.d/l the 3.1.2 firmware from the dev team site
2.click shift when i restore and use it.
3. blackra1n and = success?

or do i use sauriks server to restore? (which i don't fully get because it involves root)

In my opinion you have to go with the sauriks server restore or make your own server... just so that iTunes doesn't communicate with apples servers as they don't support the 3.1.2 fw anymore... that would be the most secure way to do it

what about if i used pwnage tool?
it suggests upgrading to 3.1.3 custom through that but i want to make sure i can unlock after
