iphone stuck with "itunes" symbol and plug in "no sim card installed"

I'm out of the country with no AT&T sim card.
I just had this replacement phone sent and I was planning on unlocking like I did before, but lo and behold I can't even get the thing to turn on properly.
Apple said the only way to do it is to insert and AT&T sim, but I don't have one (nor know anyone with one).
Anyone have any ideas??

you gotta be more specific: 3g or 3gs? firmware? baseband? etc

I have no idea about firmware/baseband because I can't even turn it on. But I assume whatever is newest because I just got it from apple.
It is a 3Gs

okay so your most prob on 3.1.3 and using a 3gs means: your out of luck... as far as I know the "spirit" jailbreak from the chronic dev should be released some time today (correct me if im wrong) which then enables you to jailbreak (untethered) your device so you can at least use it as an ipod till the unlock comes out

I just found out one of my friends has a att sim card. If I put it inside do I need to do the jailbreak while it is inside or will that automatically activate it enough so that I can jailbreak once it is released?

at the moment you can't jailbreak your device... 1. its a 3gs 2. its on 3.1.3

but very soon i think, as soon as "spirit" from the chronic devs is released... 100% going to be in the news feed of modmyi
