OK, who wants first crack at a Newby?

Simple question, answers are here, somewhere, but filtering all the threads is proving to be a daunting task. So... I will ask in the hopes someone will take pity and be gentle ;-)

iPhone 3g. Version is 3.1.2, Firmware is 5.11.07, Serial begins with 8784...

Want to Jailbreak and Unlock to use as replacement phone for existing activated account for same provider. Phone was on discount carrier (locked but not on negative file or lost/stolen), account is with parent carrier so same technology.

Question is... I want to do this the BEST way, and ideally once.

Tried running blackra1n however it errors ("application failed to start because ASL.dll was not found...") before discovering phone.

Thoughts? Suggestions???

What version of iTunes do you have installed?

iTunes version 9

Go to Program Files (x86) > Common Files > Apple > Apple Application Support
There you will see your ASL.dll Cut your blackra1n and paste it in that folder so that blackra1n and ASL.dll are together IT WILL WORK NOW!! Let me know if it works

I assume iTunes should not be running? It immediately wants to update the phone upon activating blackra1n. I have gathered that I want to remain at 3.1.2 for as long as possible?

Next step is unlocking. I use blacksn0w correct? same procedure?

To stay unlocked please stay on 3.1.2. Blacksn0w is ok to use to unlock. Some have better results with redsn0w but blacksn0w should work fine.

sorry to be a pest... redsn0w file listed here says nothing about unlocking, only jailbreaking... Am I missing something?

Where do I get Ultrasn0w and do I download it direct to the iPhone? A little confused as to what the actual procedure should be. If you could walk me through next few steps it would be VERY helpful. I am more than a little paranoid about messing this up.

I have an iPhone 3g now jailbreak with blackra1n and unactivated original network sim card. I need to unlock then install existing active carrier sim correct?

What would forums be without newbies?
