How to unlock Iphone ???

Alright well I have and iphone 2g and it has been unlocked for a long time. I have unlocked friends iphones too. I understand how to use the programs like... blacksn0w redsn0w blackra1n fuzzyband and so on. I can follow simple steps that require downloading and installing. That is not my question. I want to know how these unlocking programs work.

What does apple do to the iphones to lock them?
What has to be done to an iphone to unlock it?
What is different about the 5.12.01 bootloader and the 3.1.3?

I know I am a newbie so please be gentle on me. I am not a hacker but I am pretty good with computers and such so I have alway been curious how this works.

u have to learn alot b4 those answers can be understood..there is alot of complex things that happen when u press that jailbreak button...what i would do b4 anything is learn about the language that the iphone uses as a basis (objective-c) once u learn that, u can go into learning how to do more advance things like decrypt and such only to then understand why the phones are locked and how the process tp unlock works.
