How to jailbreak/unlock 3G V.2.2.1
I just bought a used Iphone 3G, version 2.2.1 (5H11), firmware 02.30.03. Can someone tell me: Should I use Ultrasn0w or Redsn0w? Thanks alot.

Meh, I would update to 3.1.2 and use blackra1n, easiest and fastest jailbreak to date.

A question on the same topic -
Just upgraded my iPhone 3G from OS 2.1.x to 3.1.2 with PwnageTool. Then used ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock. No cigar - the device shows "No Signal" - I assume it's not unlocked.
For some reason, my baseband remained 02.28.00 - could it be that ultrasn0w finds it too old and doesn't bother to unlock it?? How do I unlock from here?
Thanks in advance!
[Update: purplesn0w didn't work either, duh]Last edited by Abagada; 03-30-2010 at 05:52 PM.

If you unlocked, did you turn off the 3g? Leaving it on will interrupt service.

Ive had that happen before. I tried a different custom firmware, and then got signal. Also, since I have AT&T and T-Mobile, I used the factory firmware to restore, then ran Blackra1n and Blacksn0w (5.11.07 bb). On my other iPhone (4.26.08)I used Redsn0w to create firmware and Ultrasn0w to unlock.
Try with another firmware. If it doesn't work, I'd go to 3.1.2 firmware. It will upgrade your baseband to 5.11.07, but that is still unlockable.

Thanks. I used firmware for 3.1.2, made it custom with pwnagetool. For some reason it did not upgrade my baseband, and it remained 02.28.00. Is there a reason for that? I did notice an option in Pwnage whether or not t upgrade baseband but it was grayed out. How can I upgrade the baseband?

If your up and running, theres no need to. But if you want to, restore with factory firmware. It'll work because you have a 3g. Then run blackra1n, then run Blacksn0w. You will be jailbroken, unlocked, and on basseband 5.11.07.

Apparently ultrasn0w refused to work on my 02.28.00. Perhaps due to some tweak in a former life?
Restored to factory OS 3.0 (I prefer ultrasn0w to blacksn0w, so no 3.1.x for now) + redsn0w + ultrasn0w and it is a charm. I now have so many donations to make! :-P
